There were at least two strikes against Juliette Smith ever adding her name to the elite list of 1,000-point career scorers at Scott County High School.

Smith is a traditional point guard who sees the floor, dribbles her team out of trouble and makes other Lady Cards look good with pinpoint passing accuracy. Shooting is several rungs down her ladder of priorities.

Also, Smith missed her entire sophomore season in 2016-17, removing about three dozen games from her ledger in the prime of her career.

It all made the moment substantially more special when Smith surpassed the milestone Wednesday night in SC’s 85-35 home victory over Madison Central.

Smith joined the club with a layup early in the third quarter. She became the fourth Lady Cardinal in the past 25 months to clear the 1,000-point threshold, joining Peyton Riddle, Maaliya Owens and Morgan DeFoor.

Michael Moreno, Cooper Robb, Bryce Long and Diablo Stewart from the boys’ program make it eight SC athletes who have hurdled the number in that span.

Despite spotty first-half shooting from the Lady Cards (13-0), the game was no contest. Now ranked No. 80 in the nation by MaxPreps, SC returned to its running clock ways against its first Kentucky opponent since six tournament wins against out-of-state competition over the holidays.

DeFoor led Scott County with 28 points, all but three in the second and third quarters.

Kenady Tompkins added 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots, while Maaliya Owens coupled 10 points with 10 boards.

Smith, who took over the starting point guard position as an eighth-grader, served up seven assists to go with her six points.

SC warmed up to 37-for-84 (44 percent) shooting in the game and committed only four turnovers.

Jekauri McKeithen led the way with eight points for Madison Central (3-10), which shot an icy 23,2 percent from the field.

Eight different Lady Cards had at least one steal, led by DeFoor’s four. Those transitions let to a fistful of uncontested baskets in the third period, after the Lady Cards already owned a 43-17 halftime lead.

Scott County hosts DuPont Manual at 5 p.m. Friday. It will be the News-Graphic live stream game of the week. It is also a revenge game for the Lady Cards after a loss to the Lady Crimsons in the KHSAA Sweet 16 last March.
