Premier Sports takes Serie A rights from Eleven Sports

Premier Sports has secured the UK and Ireland broadcast rights to Italy’s Serie A TIM from February 2019 and will air a minimum of six games per round until the end of the 2020/21 season. Weekly highlights and preview shows are set to be broadcast by Premier Sports as well as a number of games live on sister FTA channel FreeSports.

The rights were previously with Eleven Sports, and a cooperative agreement has been made which means they will continue to broadcast this content non-exclusively in the UK until February 25th in order to minimise disruption.

This deal also includes the acquisition of the Eredivisie and the Chinese Super League with Premier Sports and FreeSports airing the biggest games of each round from the Netherlands and China across their network.

The addition of these top flight leagues adds more content for Premier customers already enjoying every game from the PRO14 rugby, the biggest Scottish Cup games and NHL. Premier Sports has announced it has secured the rights to Italy’s Serie A TIM from February 2019 and will air a minimum of six games per round until the end of the 2020/21 season. Weekly highlights and preview shows are set to be broadcast by Premier Sports as well as a number of games live on sister free-to-air channel FreeSports. The rights were previously with Eleven Sports and a cooperative agreement has been made which means they will continue to broadcast this content non-exclusively in the UK until the 25th of February 2019 in order to minimise disruption for fans.

Serie A offers the chance for UK viewers to watch the best of Italian football featuring European giants Juventus, Napoli, Roma, Inter and AC Milan amongst others, along with some of the top footballers in the world such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Mauro Icardi, Paulo Dybala and Dries Mertens.

The deal also includes the acquisition of the Eredivisie and the Chinese Super League with Premier Sports and FreeSports airing the biggest games of each round from the Netherlands and China across their network.

The addition of these top flight leagues adds more content for Premier customers already enjoying every game from the PRO14 rugby, the biggest Scottish Cup games and NHL. Premier Sports are giving Eleven Sports customers a welcome offer to subscribe to Premier Sports on the Sky or Player platforms at the reduced rate of £5.99 per month with the first month free.

“We are delighted to have signed a new partnership agreement with Premier Sports to broadcast the Serie A TIM in the UK and Ireland until the end of the 2020/2021 season,” said Marco Brunelli, Lega Serie A CEO, “Thanks to this contract, Serie A TIM will have a new home in the UK and Ireland, a very important market for Italian football. We are very happy that now our English and Irish fans will have the chance to watch the best of Serie A TIM and admire our world-class Champions”.

Richard Sweeney, CEO of Premier Sports, commented, “We are delighted to be bringing Italian football to our channel line up along with the other great football leagues. This addition adds tremendous value for our customers who already enjoy top Rugby Union, Scottish football and American sports. We look forward to announcing more content in the coming weeks as we continue to grow Premier Sports into a major pay TV operator in the UK and Ireland.”

Eleven Sports will continue to show La Liga games in the UK and Ireland, but will drop its price as a result of losing the Serie A rights.

“Our priorities lie with our subscribers who we hope will experience minimal disruption as a result of these developments,” said an Eleven Sports spokesman. “The strategic direction we have chosen allows us to focus on La Liga which not only drives real value for us in the UK and Ireland but is also a property which we continue to have a valued partnership with in five markets globally.”

The company, which is reported to have attracted about 50,000 subscriptions since its UK and Ireland launch in August, will drop its price from £5.99 to £4.99 a month.
